DocsCounsel was set up by two UK qualified lawyers in 2023 who had spent the last decade providing contract management services working in senior in-house legal roles and also working as research contract managers for a number of UK universities including University of Surrey; Oxford University; London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine; St George's Medical School; University College London and Cambridge University.

Understanding how important the contracting aspects of the business was in driving business growth and generating income, they wanted to give non-profits and universities direct access to these services at an affordable rate without the agency fees.
